History

The Verne Story

The Verne co-founders, Ted, David, and Bav, founded Verne to develop higher-density, more efficient hydrogen storage for Class 8 hydrogen trucks.

Verne set records for hydrogen storage and  conducting on-vehicle demonstrations with two major vehicle OEMs.

However, demand for power access from critical industries became too large to ignore. Growth in data centers, electric vehicle fleets and other critical industries is being held back by lack of power access.

In 2024, Verne pivoted our focus to providing power in off-grid locations using efficient, low-carbon fuels. Verne delivers energy where it is needed, when it is needed to keep these critical industries running.

Verne featured in Breakthrough Energy's "Solving for Zero" series

April 2022

A new 10-part series “Solving for Zero,” inspired by BE Founder Bill Gates’ book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster, premieres today on Wondrium. Each episode explores tangible solutions that will help us combat climate change.

The series also features teams across the Breakthrough Energy network who are working to reduce global emissions – including BEV portfolio companies Ecocem Ireland, Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Malta Inc, and Boston Metal, and BE Fellows project Verne.

Watch the full series on Wondrium to learn about the people behind the innovations that are driving us toward a net-zero future. More from Bill Gates: https://nt-z.ro/3xvlzQh

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership

Hydrogen Village at Sacramento

April 2022

The Verne team was pleased to join the inaugural CaFCP Hydrogen Village at the Sacramento State Capitol. It's great to see steady progress from Hyundai, Toyota, Kenworth, Cummins, Nikola and Hyzon on their H2 tech for zero-emission Class 8 trucks.

Thanks to the California Fuel Cell Partnership for organizing the day and to our friends in the H2 industry for swinging by to say hello.

Breakthrough Energy

Verne co-founders selected as Breakthrough Energy Fellows

October 2021

Recognizing that the world can’t reach net-zero emissions by 2050 with existing technologies alone, the Breakthrough Energy Fellows (BE Fellows) program works with the best and brightest scientists, engineers, business experts, and teams from around the globe. The BE Fellows program provides early investment and support needed to accelerate the path from innovation to commercialization.

The 2021 inaugural BE Fellows cohort comes from leading research and business institutions in North America, Europe, and New Zealand, and will receive support from Breakthrough Energy to foster groundbreaking climate innovations in electrofuels, cement, steel, hydrogen, and fertilizer.

Ted, David and Bav at Verne will specifically use their BE Fellows support to reduce emissions in one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize — heavy-duty transportation.

This new program is part of the Breakthrough Energy network, founded by Bill Gates.
